Local Government strike for fair pay 16th & 17th July 2008 | the strike in photos
UNISON is leading the campaign for a fair deal for local government workers. Hundreds of thousands of members stood together to take action to improve local government pay and conditions in July. We are now leading the negotiations to improve the pay and conditions of our members. Discussions between UNISON, Unite and the Local Government Employers has led to an understanding that talks can go ahead - joint talks are scheduled to start on 13 August. More than ever, you need a strong union with a voice that will be heard by employers and government alike.
UNISON is urging MPs to help resolve the local government pay dispute by lobbying the Local Government Association. Negotiations with employers in England, Northern Ireland and Wales are scheduled to reopen later this month and unions have agreed to suspend further action in the meantime. The agreement to back the talks over pay and conditions follows a two-day strike in July, when around half a million council workers walked out to protest a below-inflation pay offer of 2.45%.
